iPod Playlist Sort Order

So I mentioned several months ago that my beautiful wife gave me an iPod Touch as a wedding gift – sweet! Obviously I’ve been using it non-stop since I got it.

Recently though, I noticed a small problem with the playlists.

I download a lot of DJ mixes from the internet and then import them into my iTunes. I then add them to my iPod and by the time I get this far into the process, I forget what’s new & what’s old. So now I create monthly smart playlists 2009-02, 2009-03, 2009-04 etc. which has all the music I’ve added to my iPod & iTunes library & adds new stuff automatically.

This has worked flawlessly however the last couple of months, I’ve been adding some music compilations from the CD’s I own and even though it’s appearing in my iTunes library in the correct order, they were appearing on my iPod in alphabetical order by artist which is nooo good if i’m listening to DJ mixes. This meant that all the tracks where in the wrong order and it sounds terrible.

After several fruitless searches on Google and a lot of messing around deleting & re-adding albums to iTunes, reripping CD etc I still didn’t have an answer…

And then yesterday morning I read online somewhere that with iTunes Smart Playlists, they play order is often screwed. BUT if you were to right click on the playlist in iTunes and select “Copy to Play Order” then the order of play would be fixed!

Hurrah!

Just make sure that the order of play is correct on your iTunes before you hit “Copy to Play Order” otherwise it wont work properly!

This is here more as a reminder for me next time – but it’ll be good if it helps you!
